How much can you charge as a copywriter?

I’ve received a batch of questions this week about copywriting fees… everyone wants to know “HOW MUCH do I charge?” :-)

Copywriting fees have gone up considerably in the past 12 months. I used to recommend that my students start at $80, but that’s much too low now.

There’s a huge demand for skilled copywriters on the Web, and you need to start at $150 an hour, and progress to $250 an hour as your portfolio grows.

You’ll discover how to set your rates and more in my Seven Days To Easy Money: Copywriting Success, new 2007 edition.

As it says on the site, you’ll make the money you pay for the course back with your first client.

(BTW - the cost of the course will be rising in 2008.)

Marketing your copywriting services: write a script before you cold-call

Cold-calling is also known as telephone marketing. Essentially it’s just picking up the phone and calling your local businesses.

Some people are comfortable on the phone, and enjoy cold-calling, others are not. If you’re not the kind of person who interacts happily with strangers on the phone, don’t beat yourself up over it. There are plenty of other ways to market yourself.

But if you are happy telemarketing, hop to it. Write a “script” first. (This is a plan of what you’ll say.)

Try something like:

“Hello, my name is Jenny Smith. I offer professional copywriting services. I write marketing communications material. Who could I speak to about that?”

As you can see your script should be brief.  You’ll usually be put through to the marketing manager, or perhaps the owner if the business is very small. If you call an agency, you’ll speak to the creative director.

Often, you’ll reach Voice Mail. So have a voice-mail script ready, with what you do, and your contact information. Read it after the beep - slowly. Repeat your phone number, slowly.

Cold-calling gets easier the more often you do it. If you want to get clients in a hurry, it’s a must.

Set yourself a goal for the number of calls you’ll make in a day - make ten or 20 calls, and before you know it you’ll have more copywriting clients than you can handle.

If you need help setting up your copywriting services business, my ebook copywriting course shows you how: Seven Days To Easy Money: Copywriting Success, new 2007 edition.

Marketing Your Copywriting Online

With the shortage of people providing copywriting services both offline and online, marketing your copywriting services business is easy. Your clients are desperately eager to find you.

Here’s a fast process for marketing your copywriting services business: set up a Web site to explain the copywriting services you provide, and then  promote the Web site.

An initial trickle of clients will grow into a flood, the longer your site is online, and the more promotion you do - soon you won’t need to do any promotion at all, because you’ll have a stable of clients with whom you work.

Start by setting up a Web site.

Set Up A Web Site To Explain The Copywriting Services You Provide

Important Tip: the larger and more informative your site, the more promotional work your site will do for you: the search engines will index your site, and your clients will find you via searches.

Your first step is to work out what copywriting services you will provide. Make a list. If you specialize in an area like health, business, or technology, this is a great plus - clients love working with a copywriter who understands their industry.

Create one site page (or more, over time) for each service you provide. As mentioned above, the larger and more comprehensive your Web site, the more promotional work your site will do for you. However, you’ll build up the information on your site over time; initially just create your primary pages, which will include a Home page, a page for each service, an About page, and a Privacy Page.

Next, buy a domain name, get site hosting, and put your site online.

Promote Your Web Site And Services

Finally, promote your Web site and services. Start by creating a press release and post it online at one of the many press release distribution sites.

Then, create a small ad on Craigslist, the free classifed advertising site. Your ad will run for seven days; make sure that you repost it each seven days. You’ll get inquiries about your services immediately.

The above two promotional avenues will get you started. You can add whatever other promotions you wish: create a blog, write articles, buy advertising using Pay Per Click, and so on.

However, do remember that promotion will be on-going, until you have a stable of happy clients; estimate that you will promote your site and services heavily for around three months.

So there you go: get started marketing your copywriting services business today. Your clients are waiting and eager to find you.
